DEMIAN JOHNSTON

MA FINE ART

ABOUT DEMIAN

Johnston’s practice builds on a growing body of work encompassing dimensions of unpredictability and naturalness, his praxis explores the senses through installations, paint, and other forms of media. Embracing the deep and dark of the unconscious mind, as theorised by Freud and explored by artists and filmmakers such as David Lynch, he aims to break the barrier between the unconscious and the real through making. Through internal mindscapes involving multiple symbols there is praxis attempts to bridge the gap between the physicality of work and the spiritual/mental processes linking individual and combined consciousness.

Says Johnston: “It’s time for everybody to stop and look at the world with a view to seeing who is watching us and why. It is increasingly important that people step back, look at themselves, they’re surroundings and the world.”
